Good Morning!  This is the sixth article in our 10-part series, Heavy Towing. In this edition, we’ll discuss the significance of hiring a towing company that adheres to industry regulations for heavy towing. Though it may not be visible to the naked eye, many times that you see a tow truck in Edmonton, they are overwight.  Primarily talking about the ‘middle of the road’ tow truck that is hauling heavier itmes such as delivery vans, school buses and welding trucks.  By transporting these vehicles overweight, or outside the bounds of the regulations set out by the Province of Alberta has significant impact on Alberta in various ways.

To take a minute to bang our Drum, Tuber Towing has spent a signifiant amount of time at the scale house weighing various units on various styles of tow trucks to ensure we are complying when towing such units.  We have set a base line as a standard for what is needed to tow various equipment to ensure the laws are followed which protects our team, the general public and the infrastructure all around.  We want to protect our customers and the public by ensuring we aren’t OVERWEIGHT when towing and spend the money and time necessary to ensure our staff are trained on this.

What is Heavy Duty Towing?

Before we go much further, we need to first clarify what we mean by ‘Heavy Towing.’  While many in the past have considered there are three types of towing, Light, Medium and Heavy, in Alberta, there’s really only two.  Light and Heavy.  Light consists of all passenger vehicles, think of your mini van, the family sedan or the pickup for weekend trips.  Heavy Towing is effectively EVERYTHING bigger than that.  The line should be drawn at anything bigger than your average pickup is considered heavy.  Anything with a Dually Axle (4 Tires or more) at the back of the unit that isn’t a normal pickup.  Most vehicles that are ‘dual’ wheels are AT LEAST 10,000 LBS (4500KGS).  Alberta supports this reference given their ‘commercial vehcile’ restriction and roadside inspections are based on this same number.  So remember, if you see a vehicle with Dual Wheels on the back of tow truck, that isn’t a ‘normal pickup’, it should PROBABLY be towed by a tow truck that as EIGHT tires on the back, being a HEAVY Duty Tow Truck.  There are some exceptions, but the norm is that.

So, let’s dive into the key reasons why it’s essential to hire a towing company that follows regulations for heavy towing.

  1. Ensuring Safety and Compliance

Safety should always be the top priority for any towing company, and following the regulations set by the industry ensures that. By adhering to these guidelines, a towing company can minimize the risks involved in towing operations, even more so in Heavy Towing, keeping both their employees and customers safe. Moreover, compliance with regulations helps protect the company from potential legal issues and fines.  In Heavy Towing it’s easy to go over weight if you aren’t paying attention or haven’t been trained accordingly.  The safety piece is NUMBER 1.  If you have to Tow Heavy, there are ways to reduce risk and to utilizie additional braking systems to reduce risk and ensure you are being as safe as possible on public roadways.

This level of expertise translates into faster response times, fewer complications, and better overall service for customers.  In addition, with most Heavy Towing being invoiced by the hour efficiency is key.  To be efficient and safe this creates not only the best value for your dollar, it also ensures that the risk to you or your company needing the Tow is minimized.

  1. Protecting the Environment

Adhering to regulations for heavy towing also helps protect the environment. Proper towing techniques and equipment help minimize the risk of spills or leaks from damaged vehicles, which can have a negative impact on the environment.  Everyone LOVES potholes, imagine the road conditions when there aren’t overloaded vehicles running over them all the time.  When Heavy Towing, if the company isn’t using the proper equipment or too small of tow truck this is overloading equipment thus over loading the roadways, impacting them severely!  By working with a towing company that follows these guidelines, you can be sure they are doing their part to protect the environment during heavy towing operations.
