Towing Advice – Finding a Tow Truck

You get ready to leave for work, you head out to your car, turn the key and nothing.  Some vulgar words run through your mind, you shoot a text to your boss letting them know you’ll be late.  Maybe call a friend for advice or your Dad.

No luck, okay well I guess it’s time to call a towing Company.  Pull out your smart phone and search Tow Truck.  Blamo, pages and pages of ‘Towing Companies’ appear in the search but which one do you chose? How much will it cost? How long do I have to wait?

As we work through our advice pages in the next few weeks we’ll be able to answer some of these questions for you.

The first, “Which one do I chose?”  There’s a few different pieces of advice we can give relating to selecting a towing company from the list.

Firstly, since most of us like to glance at a website before calling someone, have a look.  Key features you’ll look for are photos, text and contact information.  More specifically, if it is a reputable towing company they will have photos of tow trucks WITH THEIR LOGO on them.  There are lots of ‘stock’ photos on the internet that can make a towing company look like they operate the newest equipment.  Though newest isn’t the most important it is important that they do have trucks that represent their services.

While skimming through the text look for key features about the services they provide, specifics to where they offer these services, and most importantly, Methods of Payment they accept.  (We’ll cover this in an other chapter).

A BIG indication that the company is ‘legitimate’ is that they have some affiliation with an Auto Club or other large company in the automotive industry. In Alberta, AMA seems to be the dominate Auto Club.  If the towing company you are drawn to carries the AMA logo on their truck or their website this means they have been ‘vetted’ by AMA.  This is a quick easy way of ensuring the towing company meets or exceeds the requirements of AMA, we’ll cover these in another chapter.

Social Media is another key to showing the reputation or involvement in the community.  Calling a ‘single truck company’ isn’t a bad thing, but if you know nothing about them it can pose some risk.

Next Week, Give them a call, what do you say!?

I really like that you point out that you should consider what methods of payment the towing company accepts. My sister is needing a tow truck for her old car and wants to make sure she finds the best company possible. I”ll have to help her do some research and find the best company possible.

You make some great points on how to find a good towing service. I agree that you want to consider checking their website and reputation before hiring time first. My brother is complaining about how there is always someone blocking his driveway, so he’ll have to find a qualified towing service to help take care of it.

That’s interesting that you should look for photos and contact info as well as the text. Recently, I’ve noticed that my car isn’t doing great and I’m worried it might break down. I’ll have to make sure I know a good roadside assistance service in case this happens before I can take it in to a shop.

I liked that you mentioned you need to consider choosing a towing company that shows photos of their tow trucks on their webpages. My brother is planning on moving to another city, and we are looking for advice to help him. I will let him know to have a tow truck company number at hand in case he needs it.

It was helpful when you suggested to check the website of a towing service before you decide to contact them, so you could get all of their information. My wife’s car won’t start, and it would be important for us to know that we could find a service that is reliable to help us get it to the shop. When we look for a towing service, I will be sure to check their website before we do anything.
